[August 26, 2010]  ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- The University of Michigan Museum of Art has opened a three-month show of more than 100 prints by 19th century American artist James McNeill Whistler.

The exhibition called "On Beauty and the Everyday: The Prints of James McNeill Whistler" runs through Nov. 28. It's the largest collection of Whistler's work to be displayed at the Ann Arbor museum in more than 15 years.

The show spans Whistler's career, and includes prints of scenes from London's port and Venice's canals, as well as intimate portraits of family members and himself.

The museum's Whistler collection is rarely shown in large numbers because of possible damage from light exposure.

While the exhibition is focused Whistler's prints, the artist is widely known for the iconic painting of his mother.
