[August 27, 2010]  (AP)  A dry day was expected across the nation Friday as a large and strong ridge of high pressure dominated most of the country's weather.

In the East, a low pressure system that brought light showers and cloudy skies to the Northeast would continue pushing eastward and move offshore Friday. A cold front associated with this system would hover over the Gulf states and bring more light showers to Florida and Georgia, with strong wind gusts from eastern Texas to Florida.

Another hot and humid day was expected in the Southeast and southern Plains, with highs in the 90s and 100s and heat indexes ranging from 110 to 120 degrees.

The Northeast and New England, however, would remain more comfortable as dry air moved in from Canada. This would bring sunny skies and mild temperatures with highs in the mid-70s.

To the west, the ridge of high pressure would bring pleasant weather to the Plains. Another day of sunny skies and highs in the 70s and 80s was expected across the Midwest, while the northern and central Plains may reach into the 90s.

Farther west, a trough of low pressure sitting off the West Coast would continue pushing moisture onshore from the Pacific Ocean. This would bring overcast skies with a chance for light rain and drizzle. Coastal clouds were expected to stretch down the coast of California.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 27 degrees at Boulder, Wyo., to a high of 122 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
