Paul
Beaver will be signing his new book, "Abraham Lincoln in Logan
County, Illinois 1836-1860," at Saddie's Secret Place, on the west
side of the Mount Pulaski square, this Thursday, Dec. 9, 1-3 p.m.

Saturday,
Dec. 18, will be the next all-ages dance sponsored by The
Cell. The Christmas dance will be at the Sims' Chestnut Street Grill
Red Room in Mason City from 7 to 10 p.m. The evening will include
great music by Celebration DJ, concessions and fun. Admission
proceeds go toward The Cell's reopening project.
The Cell, once organized in 2006, has
recently come back together. They are working with their continued
mission of providing drug-free and alcohol-free events for youth.
Monthly events such as dances are planned as fundraisers, as well as
events where they are focusing on being more civic-minded. Recently
a group of kids from The Cell manned the red kettles at the Lincoln
Walmart. Their four hours of ringing the bells helped add over $400
for the Salvation Army.
The
Cell had their first meeting on Dec. 5 with the election of youth
officers, who will be announced shortly. The Cell, as before, will
continue to be an organization for the youth, run by the youth. They
will be making the decisions regarding the future of the
organization.
Questions or concerns can be
forwarded to the.cell@mail.com.
Five
Mount Pulaski High School students have been named Illinois State
Scholars for 2011-12. The honored students are Hannah Allen,
daughter of Ralph and Lori Allen of Mount Pulaski; Patrick Bree,
son of Paula Bree of Mount Pulaski; Haley Casper, daughter of
Deron and Kristi Powell of Mount Pulaski and Michael Casper of
Springfield; Ethan Cline, son of Rich and Tina Shiers of
Mount Pulaski; and Samantha Nichols, daughter of Michael and
Julie Nichols of Mount Pulaski.
Illinois State Scholars are named
by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, the state's
centralized provider of financial assistance aimed at helping
students and families access postsecondary education and training.
Each year, the commission awards scholarship and grant aid to
qualified students and also provides loans to qualifying students.
The agency also offers a broad array of outreach and informational
services to ensure that families have access to the information they
need to pay for a college education.
Illinois State Scholars rank in the
top 10 percent of high school seniors across Illinois. Selection is
based on SAT, ACT and Prairie State Achievement Exam scores, and
class rank at the end of the junior year. While the designation of
Illinois State Scholar is not a monetary award, students who are
selected are the top students academically in each high school in
Illinois.
