I-55 has series of weather-related accidents

[December 13, 2010]  SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois State Police District 9 released the following report at 6:42 p.m. Sunday:

Incidents: Weather-related incidents

Location: Sangamon and Logan counties

Date, time: Dec. 12, 7 a.m.-5:30

Assisting agencies: Illinois State Police District 9

Narrative:

Starting at 7 a.m. Sunday, Illinois State Police District 9 handled 159 incidents relating to icy roads and poor visibility. The incidents included motorist assists and 42 crashes, primarily located on Interstate 55 in Sangamon and Logan County.

A 20-vehicle pileup occurred at 11:48 a.m. on southbound I-55 at milepost 113, approximately four miles north of the Williamsville exit. During the pileup, the rear of a semitrailer caught fire. Due to the proximity of other vehicles, an ambulance and three other passenger cars were burned. Three people were transported to Springfield Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The pileup was treated as one incident.

There were only minor injuries reported in the remaining 41 crashes.

Hazardous conditions remain in northern Logan County.
