[December 14, 2010]  (AP)  Cold temperatures were expected to persist over the central U.S. on Tuesday while wet and snowy conditions persist on both coasts.

A deep low pressure system spinning over the Northeast would slowly move northward and into eastern Canada. Flow around this system was expected to continue pushing moisture onshore, allowing for scattered rain showers over the extreme Northeast, with snow at high elevations of Vermont and Hew Hampshire. Rainfall totals would be lighter than Monday, but snowfall totals may reach up to 4 inches in the mountains.

Along the backside of this system, strong flow from the north was expected. This would produce more lake-effect snow as flow over the Great Lakes picked up moisture and dumped heavy, wet snow along the southern shores. Another 2 to 4 inches of snow was expected over northeastern New York, northeastern Pennsylvania and northern Ohio. Blustery conditions were also expected across the region, due to a drastic change from high pressure in the Plains to low pressure in the East. Wind gusts over the Great Lakes and Midwest were expected to reach up to 20 mph.

Another chilly day was expected over the Plains. High pressure over the Plains would continue pulling cold and dry air in from Canada. This would allow for more sunny skies with highs below 10 degrees in the North, while the central Plains would only reach into the 30s. Frost and freeze advisories were in effect for the South as overnight lows were forecast to dip into the 20s for a few hours again Tuesday night.

In the West, more wet and snowy conditions were anticipated over the Pacific Northwest as a low pressure system in the Gulf of Alaska moved into British Columbia and pushed a cold front onshore. This cold front was expected to continue bringing rain and high-elevation snow to Washington and Oregon as well as northern California. Another cooler day was expected, with highs in the 50s and 60s in the West.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a morning low of minus 32 degrees at International Falls, Minn., to a high of 82 degrees at Ardmore, Okla.
