[December 14, 2010]  SPRINGFIELD (AP) -- Springfield Alderman Gail Simpson says Mayor Tim Davlin was a "wonderful guy" who did his best for the city.

Davlin was found dead in his home Tuesday morning after he failed to show up for a court hearing involving a cousin's estate.

Police aren't releasing details about how the 53-year-old Democrat died.

A tearful Simpson says she is shocked by Davlin's death. She says his biggest accomplishment was keeping the city afloat through hard times.

She says she spoke to him about a week and a half ago, after he decided not to seek re-election, and he seemed "like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders." She says he didn't like the thought of laying people off.

Davlin had been mayor of Illinois' capital city of 120,000 since 2003.

In Chicago, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says he's stunned and saddened that Springfield Mayor Tim Davlin has died.

Durbin, who is also a Democrat, says Davlin's work always reflected his dedication to Springfield.

Durbin says his thoughts and prayers are with Davlin's family and friends.

And Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn said Springfield is a better place because of the leadership of the late Mayor Tim Davlin.

Quinn, a fellow Democrat, says in a statement that Davlin "was a great public servant" who loved the city and its people.

He says Davlin led the community through some of its most difficult times and worked hard to revitalize the city.

And he says the mayor will be missed by all who knew him.
