Shopping locally: 4th in a series
A personal gift certificate can be a hit at Christmas

Send a link to a friend

[December 14, 2010]  Right now the main thought on most shoppers' minds is what to buy their loved ones and friends for Christmas.

Gift cards and gift certificates offer some opportunities to give someone a gift that is truly useful, while at the same time leaving the specifics up to them.

Once again, throughout Logan County there are literally dozens of businesses that are prepared to help you find that perfect service gift. It would be a good idea to know what kind of services your loved one or friend enjoys and if they have a specific business they prefer. Then, giving a gift certificate from that place would be the best idea.

Sandy Birk at Mirror Images has an excellent gift suggestion for anyone with a loved one on a fixed income.

For some of our senior ladies in particular, having their hair done once a week or even once a month is very important to them, but on a fixed income, sometimes the budget won't allow that kind of service.

Birk said it's a lovely idea to buy someone a year's worth of hair services.

Birk offers gift certificates that can be purchased in any dollar amount and used for products or services at Mirror Image. If you are interested in purchasing a year's worth of services, stop in and talk to Sandy.

In addition to hair care, Mirror Image offers manicures and pedicures and, coming in the very near future, acrylic nail applications. Birk said nail services are very reasonably priced, with basic services starting at $15 and running up to the $35-$40 range.

Mirror Images is located at 118 S. Hamilton in Lincoln.

Hair Designers Salon and Spa

With Christmas just a few days away, it is easy to get stuck in the here and now as we look for gifts that will give immediate gratification. However, this is also the right time of year to be thinking ahead.

If you have someone on your list who will be having senior pictures taken, a senior prom to attend or perhaps a wedding, these are times when one wants their complexion to be at its very best, and that doesn't happen overnight.

Glenda Allison at Hair Designers Salon and Spa, located at 170 Campus View Drive in Lincoln, will be happy to talk with you about a gift certificate for some of her advanced complexion treatments and products.

Generally, to get the optimum benefit from this program, multiple visits are involved, so starting now for an event a few months into the future is a wise idea.

In addition to the complexion treatments, Hair Designers also provides full-service hair care, from cuts, colors and perms to hair-care products; offers teeth whitening; or your gift certificate could go to a makeup application for a special event.

Absolute Harmony Salon and Day Spa

Not so long ago, if one made a bad decision about a particular hair style, there was nothing to do but live with it until it grew out and could be redone. As mother used to say, "Once you cut it off, you can't glue it back on."

However, according to Melissa Fleshmann at Absolute Harmony, that is no longer the case. Using Remi human hair extensions, she can fix that bad choice even on short haircuts.

Hair extensions are real hair that can be washed, colored, and even cut and styled. They can be used to lengthen and add volume to short hair or to give fullness and body to longer styles.

Absolute Harmony offers gift certificates in any dollar amount that can be used for any service or product at the salon.

In addition to hair extensions, Fleshmann offers haircuts, color, perms, artificial nail services, manicures, pedicures, facials and body waxing.

Absolute Harmony Salon and Day Spa is located at 521 Broadway St. in Lincoln.

Styx Unlimited Tat2 Emporium

In April, Lincoln saw a new business come to the downtown area. Styx Unlimited Tat2 Emporium is owned and operated by Styx Killion, an award-winning tattoo artist with a wide variety of offerings in the line of body art and piercing.

Body art is a means of self-expression and self-identity that, according to Styx, knows no age limit and is not gender-specific, although one must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a tattoo.

The emporium, located at the corner of Broadway and Kickapoo, offers state-of-the-art equipment in a very sterile environment. Artwork is done in a special room while visitors wait comfortably on a large sofa in the front of the store.

Exterminator

Serving to completely dispel the stereotypical settings often seen on television cop shows of dark, dingy little businesses, Styx offers a very clean, well-lit and comfortable environment that sets the visitor at ease.

The emporium offers gift certificates in any dollar amount that can be used for any of the products or services offered by the business.

Tattoos today can be anything from a large, intricate piece of art to a tiny signature piece. Whatever the choice may be, if you have a friend or loved one who has long desired to have a tat or has a piece they would like to add on to, a gift certificate from Styx will get them headed in the right direction.

In addition to body art, Styx offers piercing and a complete line of hand-carved organic jewelry used specifically in body piercing, in a wide range of prices.

While right now your mind is set on Christmas, remember that after Christmas comes New Year's, a time when resolutions are made that most often revolve around image.

New hair, new complexion, new makeup, new nails, even new tattoos or piercings can be just the thing your loved one needs this year to give them a boost of self-confidence and help them re-create themselves as a person. Being the one to give them that opportunity will certainly make you a hero this Christmas season.
