[December 17, 2010]  WHITINGHAM, Vt. (AP) -- Vermont State Police say a shoeless toddler found walking down a road has been reunited with his mother, who was asleep when he walked out by himself.

Wearing socks but no shoes in snowy, 12-degree weather, the 21-month-old boy was spotted by a motorist driving to work on Thursday in Whitingham, near the Massachusetts border. The motorist called police, who sent an ambulance crew that found him healthy and unharmed.

Eventually, state police went to his house -- about 500 feet from where he was found. They found his mother sleeping. Her name wasn't released.

Trooper Mike Sorensen says the boy had apparently put on his coat and walked out while she dozed.

The incident was reported to the state Department for Children and Families.
