[December 28, 2010]  (AP)  A large winter storm in the Northeast was expected to move away from the region on Tuesday, allowing for only a few scattered flurries and overall drier conditions. Forecasters predicted that the system will quickly move eastward and offshore into the Atlantic Ocean, but flow around the system could push some residual moisture over Maine, Massachusetts and the surrounding coastal regions.

InsuranceTotal snowfall accumulation on Tuesday was forecast to be much less than on Monday, with only 1 to 3 inches anticipated. Blowing snow was likely to be the main issue as strong winds with gusts up to 30 mph are anticipated.

Behind this system, dry and cool conditions were expected to build in from the Plains, as a wide ridge of high pressure expands to the East Coast. Forecasters believe this system will bring cold and dry air in from Canada and create strong flow from the north. Forecasters expected sunny skies across most of the eastern half of the country, with highs in the 20s and 30s in the North, and the South remaining in the 50s and 60s.

In the West, another Pacific storm was expected to move onshore, pulling ample moisture with it. While the Pacific Northwest was forecast to see more rain, with snow in the Cascades, the front associated with the system was likely to dip into California, also triggering periods of heavy precipitation.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday have ranged from a morning low of minus 9 degrees at Dubuque, Iowa, to a high of 86 degrees at Lakeland Region, Fla.
