[February 01, 2010]  Melanie Riggs, the former city clerk who was arrested and charged with embezzling funds from the city of Lincoln, was sentenced today in federal court in Springfield.

Riggs, through her defense attorney, had asked for probation, as she was a first-time offender.

The judge didn't agree, but gave Riggs a lesser time in jail. The statute allows 10 to 16 months for such a crime.

Riggs will begin a three-month incarceration in a federal jail in April, followed by a five-month house arrest. She will be on probation for three years after that.

She is also required to pay full restitution to the city for the funds she had embezzled, which she had willingly agreed to previously.

Riggs did find work and at her sentencing told the judge that she currently is working as a temp during the income tax filing period.
