[February 10, 2010]  (AP)  Snow was expected to persist over the Midwest and New England on Wednesday as a strong winter storm continued tracking through the country.

InsuranceThe system was forecast to strengthen as it reached the East Coast, due to counterclockwise flow picking up moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and spreading moisture onshore. With cold air over the region, it could allow for another 5 to 9 inches over much of Pennsylvania and New York, while Maryland could see 3 to 7 inches.

Abundant moisture was not expected to reach the extreme Northeast, with Maine expected to see only 1 to 2 inches of new snow Wednesday.

The Great Lakes region could see decreasing snowfall. High pressure moving in from the Plains was expected to start drying out the region. Up to 3 inches of snow and strong winds with gusts up to 30 mph were expected, which could create dangerous road conditions and low visibility.

Dry and cool weather was expected elsewhere in the Plains, Mississippi River Valley and southern U.S. because of a large ridge of high pressure pulling cool air in from Canada. Temperatures in the northern Plains and upper Midwest were expected to reach into the single digits, while the southern Plains and Southeast could see highs in the 40s.

In the West, a low pressure system spinning in the Pacific was forecast to continue pushing a cold front through California. It was expected to track southeast through the state and combine with an area of low pressure developing over Mexico. The combination could bring scattered showers to central and southern California, while southern portions of the Southwest may also see light rain.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of minus 25 degrees at Havre, Mont., to a high of 81 degrees at Kendall, Fla.
