[February 11, 2010]  (AP)  Active winter weather was expected to wind down across the northeastern U.S. on Thursday, a day after the region was slammed with another major snowstorm.

Heavy snowfall across the region was expected to taper off by the early morning as the system responsible for Wednesday's extreme weather moved farther offshore. Patches of light snowfall and strong winds could persist across the lower Great Lakes and the central and northern Appalachians.

To the south, another energetic storm was forecast to develop in the subtropical jet and bring wet weather to eastern New Mexico and most of the southern Plains. Moisture associated with the system was expected to combine with cold air over the region to produce between 3 and 5 inches of high-elevation snow and a mix of rain, sleet and snow across lower elevations.

Wintry precipitation could produce slick and icy roads, and delay travel times during the morning and evening commutes. The system was expected to trek east during the day and bring similar conditions to the Southeast by Friday.

In the West, coastal and valley rain showers along with mountain snow was expected to continue throughout the Pacific Northwest as a strong frontal disturbance advanced toward the coastline. Showers were forecast to move into northern California throughout the day and into Friday, while a warming trend and dry weather was expected to persist across southern California.

On Wednesday, temperatures in the Lower 48 states ranged from a low of minus 27 degrees at Roy Lake, S.D., to a high of 69 degrees at Miami, Fla.
