[February 12, 2010]  (AP)  Rain and snow were moving from the deep South into the Southeast on Friday as a developing storm system in the Gulf of Mexico pushes to the east.

The storm was expected to bring snow all the way into the eastern Carolinas by nightfall, and accumulations up to half a foot were forecast for some locations.

The storm was predicted to continue heading eastward overnight, moving off the coast and bringing an end to precipitation in the region. Fortunately for the hard-hit areas in the Mid-Atlantic, dry conditions were expected during the weekend. Besides the snow expected throughout portions of the Southeast, heavy rain was likely across parts of Florida and southern Georgia.

In the Northwest, wet weather with high-elevation snow was expected to continue as a new Pacific storm moves into the region. The storm was to help bring some snow to Vancouver, which has suffered from a snow deficit this year, just in time for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. Windy conditions and heavy rain were also expected along the coast.

The nation's midsection was expected to see calm weather Friday as high pressure builds in the region. High clouds were likely to be scattered across the region, but most areas were predicted to see sunny skies.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of minus 20 degrees at Ely, Minn., to a high of 70 degrees at El Centro, Calif.
