1st round of storms blankets Northeast

[February 24, 2010]  ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Hundreds of schools are closed and more than 130,000 customers are without power in the Northeast as the first round of a double-whammy storm brought wet, heavy snow to central New York and New England, which has had a virtually snowless winter until now.

Nearly 2 feet of snow has fallen in parts of eastern New York, and over 120,000 customers are without power. In Vermont, almost a foot of snow fell across the state overnight, leaving nearly 10,000 customers in the dark.

The National Weather Service reports snowfall totals range from nearly a foot in northeast Pennsylvania to 15 inches in the Berkshires in western Massachusetts.

And more snow is on the way for parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania still digging out from back-to-back blizzards earlier this month.
