InsuranceA low pressure system hovering over the Northeast was forecast to continue pulling moisture onshore from the Atlantic Ocean and cool air from Canada, creating snow across the region. Between 1 and 3 inches was expected in most areas, while the extreme Northeast could see between 3 and 5 inches.

In high elevations of the Appalachians, blizzard conditions with wind gusts of 30 mph were expected along with 5 to 7 inches of new snow. High temperatures were expected to remain in the lower 30s in most of the region.

In the South, a small ridge of high pressure was forecast to build over the Mid-Atlantic states and Southeast that could bring a quick break in wet weather before another system moves in from the west. The region was expected to see mostly sunny skies with highs in the 50s and 60s.

A trough of low pressure expected to spin into the Gulf of Mexico could pick up moisture and spread scattered showers over the eastern Gulf states. Isolated thunderstorms were expected in the afternoon.

In the West, a low pressure system spinning in the Pacific Ocean could push another cold front over the Pacific Northwest and bring heavy rain and snow to the region. Up to 3 inches of rain was expected along the coasts and more than an inch could fall inland. In the Sierras and Cascades, between 7 and 11 inches of new snow could fall at elevations above 4,000 feet, while 2 to 3 inches could reach to 2,500 feet in elevation.

On Thursday, temperatures in the Lower 48 states ranged from a low of minus 24 degrees at Orr, Minn., to a high of 79 degrees at Thermal, Calif.
