As of 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, the Illinois State Police cited 20
crashes, 75 off-the-road incidents and 90 motorist assistance calls.
The ISP is calling for motorists to be cautious and to drive only if
necessary. The National Weather Service has
continued a winter storm warning that is in effect until 6 a.m.
Friday.
Dan Fulscher at Logan County Emergency Management said that
snow-packed roads are becoming iced and drivers are cautioned about
making any trips outside of an emergency. Blowing and drifting snow
may make some country roads impassable.
With winds picking up to 15-20 mph this evening, visibility as
well as traction will be difficult, if not impossible.
Fulscher stated that snowmobile teams are on standby and ready
to assist as needed.
Lincoln Mayor Keith Snyder advised that city crews were out early
this morning and will work streets into the evening hours. They will
then turn their attention to the downtown area. Some problems with
hydraulics and flat tires slowed units down, but all plows are
operational this afternoon.
Like ISP and EMA, the mayor recommends people stay off roads this
evening unless there is an absolute emergency.
If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, blanket, food and
water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
