Quinn appoints asst. director of public health

[February 04, 2010]  SPRINGFIELD (AP) -- Gov. Pat Quinn has appointed a former Chicago Public Schools official as an assistant director of the state's department of public health.

HardwareTeresa Garate says she's looking forward to working for the promotion of safe and healthy communities.

Dr. Damon Arnold, the state’s public health director, says Garate's background and experience will help protect residents throughout the state.

Garate served as chief of staff for the Office of Specialized Services for Chicago Public Schools under Arne Duncan.

She also helped lead an initiative to create a collaboration between the school district and the Chicago Department of Public Health.

She is currently a Ph.D. candidate.
