Carroll Catholic to use Kroger grant for STEM education

[February 04, 2010]  John Link, principal at Carroll Catholic, explained to students, faculty and parents the importance of the $2,000 grant received from Kroger yesterday morning:

HardwareToday we express our deep gratitude for this grant award, a gift that unites Kroger and Carroll Catholic School in a common goal: the pursuit of excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, also known as STEM education.

With this generous gift, we are establishing the Carroll Engineering Initiative, a STEM focus which we will continue to develop and expand.

As a first step, The Kroger Co. Foundation grant enables us to purchase 3 technology centered programs for our engineering initiative: “Crayon Physics," "Engineering is Elementary," and "Building with Math."

With a combination of software, stories, building kits and more, these programs will augment our current curriculum from preschool to grade 8, engaging even the youngest of students in lessons about technology design and problem solving.

The Carroll Engineering Initiative will not only enrich our students' academic experience, but will also establish Carroll as a premier STEM school in Logan County.

In this way we will lead area schools in bringing new opportunities to our students, opportunities which are usually deferred to high school. Thanks to the Kroger Co. Foundation, our current, and future, Carroll Catholic students will not have to wait to embrace exciting and enriching 21st century technology and engineering opportunities.

By recognizing and rewarding Carroll's vision for STEM education, The Kroger Co. Foundation continues its commitment to educational and community support which it has generously sustained since its inception in 1987. We applaud Kroger for this commitment, a commitment rooted in corporate values such as: honesty, integrity, respect for others, diversity, safety, and inclusion.

Carroll Catholic students and teachers will reap the benefits of these values held by the Kroger Co. Foundation, and by the many men and women who work hard to uphold them in Kroger stores.

On behalf of faculty, students and their families, we thank you, and we welcome your generous participation in the Carroll Engineering Initiative.
