Narrative:
From about 6 to 11 a.m. Wednesday the Illinois State
Police responded to multiple crashes and calls for assistance on
Interstate 55 in the area of northern Sangamon County and southern
Logan County. The incidents were directly related to the ice-covered
roadways. Twelve motorist assists and 30 crashes were handled during
that time, including a minor personal injury crash involving an
Illinois State Police trooper assigned to District 9.
Trooper Travis Molloy was responding to a vehicle in the ditch on
I-55 northbound at milepost 109. With his emergency lights
activated, Molloy positioned the squad car on the right shoulder. A
second vehicle, operated by Andrea I. Silas, 39, of Springfield,
lost control and began to spin. The driver's-side rear portion of
Silas' vehicle struck the rear of the squad car, and both vehicles
received extensive damage.
Silas and Molloy were transported to Memorial Hospital, where
they were treated for minor injuries and released.
