Gov. Quinn signs bicycle safety bill

New bill will impose penalties on motorists who endanger cyclists on roadways

[July 06, 2010]  CHICAGO -- Cyclists in Illinois have a new champion.

HardwareGov. Pat Quinn has signed legislation to better protect bicyclists on the roadways.

The legislation was signed Monday at Campbell Street Bicycle Shop in northwest suburban Arlington Heights.

Ed Barsotti, executive director of the League of Illinois Bicyclists, said the bill "will help both motorists and bicyclists do their parts in sharing our roadways safely."

According to the group, the bill will establish new penalties for motorists who endanger bicyclists on the road.

New "Share the Road" Illinois license plates were also announced.
