The nation's weather

[July 06, 2010]  (AP)  A relatively mild weather day was expected over the nation Tuesday as a ridge built in the East and a low pressure system took a northerly track through Canada.

InsuranceA low pressure system developed over the Rockies and would move northeastward into central Canada. This system would create a cold front that would push through the central Plains and into the mid-Mississippi River Valley. This front would kick up scattered showers and thunderstorms that would diminish throughout the day as the system ran into a large ridge of high pressure in the East. These storms were not expected to turn severe, and the front would significantly reduce temperatures as it passed. Flooding would remain a concern over the Mississippi River Valley.

In the East, the dominating ridge of high pressure would bring another hot and humid day to most of the East Coast. The strong sinking motion associated with high pressure would allow for low air quality over most of New England. The region also would remain under a heat advisory as highs were expected to approach 100 again.

In the Southeast, another day of scattered showers and thunderstorms was expected as onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico persisted. The region would remain hot and humid with highs in the 90s.

Out West, another mild weather day was expected as high pressure hovered over the West Coast. The region would remain sunny with a few patchy clouds along the coasts, as seasonable temperatures persisted.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 33 degrees at Truckee-Tahoe, Calif., to a high of 113 degrees at Southport, N.C.
