July 3, the Original Farmers' Market of Lincoln, in
Latham Park, kicked off their annual weekly produce drawing, and the
first winner of the year was Annette Siebert of Lincoln. The
Saturday morning vendors each make donations to the basket from
their offerings at the market, and one lucky winner each week is
drawn at random. Anyone who stops in at the market is eligible to
enter the drawing, with no purchase necessary. This Saturday, July
10, the market will feature locally grown ripe tomatoes. Be sure to
stop in and take advantage of this first offering of the season
along with many other fresh produce products.

The Saturday morning market runs 7
a.m. to noon with no early sales, please.
Monmouth College recently announced the names of several incoming
students who have been awarded endowed scholarships for the 2010-11
academic year. Devin Pegram of Lincoln has been awarded the
Roy S. Anderson Scholarship, which was established in 1986.
Anderson, a 1922 Monmouth graduate, served as a coach and athletic
director at Lincoln Community High School. The scholarship is
awarded to an LCHS graduate who ranks in the top 15 percent of the
senior class. Preference is given to students who plan to major in
education.
The Jake Lessen Memorial Golf Outing will be held Friday,
July 16, at The Rail in Springfield. The fundraiser is in memory of
Lincolnite Jake Lessen, who was killed in a motorcycle accident on
Labor Day in 2006. Jake went to West Lincoln-Broadwell grade school
and LCHS. He was in the U.S. Air Force and was a firefighter in
Springfield when he died. His widow, Kristin, is currently employed
as the director of the Rural Health Partnership at ALMH. The golf
outing was first held in 2007 and in the last three years has raised
$15,000 for the Jake Lessen Scholarship fund at Lincoln Land
Community College. This scholarship is for a fire science major. The
fund also supports fire departments by giving a $500 prize to a fire
department to use at their discretion. Last year's winners used the
money to purchase a computer for the firefighters. For more
information or to register, call Kelly Bogdanic at 217-737-8807 or
Lana Miller at 217-737-1631.
