[July 12, 2010]  (AP)  The Midwest was forecast to kick off the workweek with wet and active weather Monday as a cold front moved through the central U.S.

AHardwares the front progressed through the moisture-rich environment of the Midwest, scattered showers, thunderstorms and periodic heavy rain would develop across the upper Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley and into the Tennessee Valley. Unsettled weather was also expected to spread across the central Plains and the Southeast. Storms in the central Plains and the Ohio and Tennessee valleys had a slight chance of turning severe with damaging winds and large hail.

Elsewhere in the East, heat and humidity would return to the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast as high pressure moved offshore.

Meanwhile, in the West, a strong storm system would pass to the north of the Pacific Northwest on Monday. Increasing clouds, strong winds and cooler temperatures would develop across the region as the system passed.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 31 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 119 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
