[July 14, 2010]  (AP)  A trough of low pressure in the East Coast was forecast to slowly move eastward Wednesday and Thursday.

This would result in continued scattered showers and thunderstorms from New England southward to the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast and eastern portion of lower Mississippi Valley. Locally heavier rains were possible, especially along the Northeast Coast.

In the midsection of the nation, an unseasonably strong cold front over the northern Plains associated with a low pressure system in central Canada would slowly strengthen and move eastward over the next few days. It was expected to fuel moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms from the northern Plains to the upper Midwest and central Plains. In particular, a risk of severe thunderstorms was expected across the upper Midwest and central Plains. Damaging winds and hail would be the main threat. A few tornadoes were possible across southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin into northeastern Iowa.

After the front passed through, much cooler and drier weather would fill in, bringing high temperatures in the 70s in the northern and central Plains.

In contrast, a rich plume of Gulf moisture ahead of the cold front would keep the area east of the Plains muggy and raise heat indexes close to triple digits.

Elsewhere, isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms were possible in parts of the Four Corners as some tropical moisture crept up from Mexico.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 34 degrees at Redmond, Ore., to a high of 108 degrees at Palm Springs, Calif.
