"The new license plate is a way to pay tribute to our Illinois
citizens who have been awarded the Purple Heart and who are
motorcyclists," Bomke said. "It is just another way to help honor
individuals for their service to our country." Currently, Illinois
offers many specialty license plates, including a Purple Heart
license plate for cars and pickup trucks.
"The idea for Purple Heart motorcycle plates was brought to me by
a constituent who is a Purple Heart recipient," Bomke said.
"Reps. Poe and Brauer were sponsors of this bill in the House. It
is great to see this widely supported bill signed into law by Gov.
Quinn."
The origin of the Purple Heart dates to the Revolutionary War,
and the Purple Heart has been awarded in its current form for
decades. A member of the U.S. military is awarded a Purple Heart if
he or she dies or is wounded in service of our country.
The new law creating Purple Heart motorcycle license plates will
go into effect on Jan. 1, 2011.
