[July 23, 2010]  (AP)  Scattered showers and thunderstorms were forecast to persist in the North, while the Southeast would remain hot and humid Friday.

InsuranceA low pressure system in the northern Plains would continue skirting eastward across the Great Lakes and push a warm front eastward with it. This front would kick up scattered showers and thunderstorms and possibly some severe weather as it has a history of producing strong winds and multiple tornadoes.

Meanwhile, another trough of low pressure would develop in the northern Rockies just behind the system and push another front through the northern and central Plains. This front would continue kicking up large hail and may allow for periods of heavy downpours. Highs would remain in the 80s and 90s over most of the central U.S.

To the South, a ridge of high pressure spinning over the Gulf of Mexico would allow for plenty of sunshine with hot and humid conditions over the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic States and southern Plains. Heat advisories were issued over much of the South as these conditions allow for heat indexes to reach well above 100 degrees. These conditions were also favorable for afternoon thunderstorm development, some of which may turn severe.

In the West, monsoon moisture would linger over the southwestern U.S. and remain trapped under a ridge of high pressure. This would kick up another day of scattered showers and thunderstorms over Arizona and New Mexico.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 34 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 118 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
