[June 11, 2010]  (AP)  Stormy weather was forecast to persist in the Midwest on Friday, as a low pressure system pushed a warm front through the region.

The low would track northeastward from the Plains and push the front through the Midwest. This front would kick up scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day, with severe weather expected to develop from Nebraska to the Great Lakes. Rainfall totals would range from a quarter to a half of an inch, with over an inch likely in areas of thunderstorm development. Strong winds, large hail and heavy downpours were expected as these storms had a history of turning severe.

The Great Lakes would see highs in the 70s, while the southern Plains would reach into the 90s, with most of the central U.S. remaining under humid conditions.

Behind this system, to the west, another trough of low pressure would develop off the Rockies and move into the high Plains. This would kick up some scattered showers and thunderstorms over northern Colorado and Nebraska late in the day.

In the East, a ridge of high pressure would allow for another pleasant day over the Northeast and New England.

However, in the Southeast, a high-level trough of low pressure would move northeastward up the Mississippi River Valley. This would pick up moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms.

The Southeast would remain in the 90s, while the Northeast would see highs in the 70s.

Out West, warmer conditions were expected as a low pressure system moved away from the Pacific Northwest and high pressure built over the region. A few lingering showers were expected in the morning over Oregon and Washington, while California would see plenty of sunshine and warm conditions throughout the day.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 106 degrees at Wink, Texas.
