[June 16, 2010]  (AP)  The low pressure system that was responsible for the widespread heavy rain in the Great Plains was expected to lift northeast into the Great Lakes and Northeast on Wednesday, carrying a cold front through the Ohio Valley and Tennessee Valley.

This would result in widespread coverage of showers and thunderstorms east of the Mississippi Valley, with a risk of severe thunderstorms across parts of the Mid-Atlantic from Virginia to Pennsylvania. Farther south, from North Carolina across the Southeast, storms were expected to once again increase in the afternoon. Excessive moisture and sea breezes would help to enhance localized thunderstorms.

Moving to the West, a potent trough of low pressure would move inland from the Pacific Northwest, bringing much cooler temperatures to the western U.S. Wednesday. Apart from that, rain showers and very high elevation snow were forecast for the Intermountain West and northern Plains. A risk of severe thunderstorms was also expected over the northern Rockies and adjacent northern Plains from Wednesday afternoon to early Thursday. Severe cells and storm clusters were expected to fire up, possibly producing very large hail and high winds and even a few tornadoes.

Elsewhere, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorm were still expected in parts of the central and southern Plains. Forecasters said a few storms may become severe from eastern Nebraska and Kansas southeastward to Oklahoma and Missouri.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 28 degrees at Leadville, Colo., to a high of 107 degrees at Blythe, Calif.
