[June 23, 2010]  Recently Habitat for Humanity of Logan County presented a set of books to Elkhart Public Library.

Lyle Fout and Harli Petri, former Habitat board members and currently co-chairs of the building committee for the new Habitat home being constructed in Elkhart, presented the books to Vanda Liesman, Elkhart librarian, but especially to the children of the community.

In sharing this gift with public libraries, Habitat begins the thinking of volunteerism for all ages. Their message is: "We truly hope this book finds a special spot in your community and Habitat for Humanity becomes a household word and experience."

At the time of each house blessing for a new home, Habitat for Humanity of Logan County also gives one book of the set to the new family of homeowners.

Written by Ronald Kidd, a children's author, and beautifully illustrated, these books not only tell an interesting story, but also teach children (and adults) how to make a better world.

The complete set is:

  • "Building Friends," in which two friends develop strong relationship by working together.

  • "Doorway to the World," a fascinating, fun look at cultures around the world.

  • "Grandpa's Hammer," in which a young girl renews a grandfather's sense of purpose.

  • "Raising the Roof," with David learning about sharing as he builds a special project.

The Logan County Habitat affiliate has previously donated sets of these books to the children's sections of Lincoln Public Library, Mount Pulaski Public Library, and Atlanta Public Library and Museum.
