Blatter says FIFA to reopen debate on technology

[June 29, 2010]  JOHANNESBURG (AP) -- FIFA president Sepp Blatter says soccer's governing body will "reopen the file" on video technology at a meeting of its rule-making panel in Wales next month, after two major refereeing mistakes at the World Cup.

On Sunday the referee at England's match with Germany missed a clear English goal that would have tied the score 2-2. Germany went on to win 4-1. Hours later, a referee awarded a goal to Argentina on a play in which the goal-scorer was obviously offside. Argentina went on to beat Mexico 3-1.

Blatter says FIFA deplores "when you see the evidence of refereeing mistakes." He said Tuesday it would be "a nonsense" not to consider changes.

Blatter also said he had apologized to English and Mexican soccer officials.

The FIFA president also says the officiating rules can't be changed while the tournament is going on.
