IAEA chief can't confirm Iran's nuke work peaceful

[March 01, 2010]  VIENNA (AP) -- The chief of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency says he cannot confirm that all of Iran's nuclear activities are peaceful.

International Atomic Energy Agency head Yukiya Amano says Iran has not given his agency the level of cooperation necessary to make a determination on that issue.

Amano spoke Monday at the start of a 35-nation IAEA board meeting focusing on Iran's nuclear defiance.

Iran has refused to heed U.N. Security Council demands that it stop uranium enrichment. It also is stonewalling an International Atomic Energy Agency probe of its alleged attempts to build a nuclear weapons program.

Iran insists its activities are peaceful. Many nations fear it wants to build nuclear weapons.
