[March 26, 2010]  (AP)  Wet weather was expected to dissipate in the eastern U.S. on Friday as a strong low pressure system moves offshore.

HardwareAfter freezing overnight lows, most of the Northeast and northern New England were forecast to see a few scattered snow showers early Friday morning, but no more than an inch of snow was expected, followed by sunny skies and highs in the 40s in the afternoon. Strong winds were likely with gusts up to 20 mph in most areas.

The Southeast should also see clearer skies throughout the day with highs reaching into the 70s.

In the central U.S., a strong ridge of high pressure was expected to slowly push eastward and extend over the Mississippi River Valley and into the eastern U.S., allowing for plenty of sunshine over the Midwest. Sunny conditions were likely to cause more snowmelt, adding to problems with flooding over the Red River of the north and the mid- and upper Mississippi.

In the central and southern Rockies, more snow showers were forecast with up to 3-5 inches of new snow likely in Colorado. Strong winds were expected in the Plains, with gusts up to 30 mph over the region. Further west, scattered showers were expected with snow in higher elevations over the Pacific Northwest and northern California.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 1 degree at Grand Marais, Minn., to a high of 87 degrees at El Centro, Calif.
