[May 01, 2010]  NEW YORK (AP) -- Horton Foote's "The Orphans' Home Cycle" has been named best play of the season by the New York Drama Critics' Circle.

Foote's play is a nine-hour examination of one man's life in small-town Texas during the first decades of the 20th century.

The Circle also voted Friday not to give awards for best musical or best foreign play.

Special citations were awarded to the Lincoln Center Festival, actress Viola Davis -- currently on Broadway in "Fences" -- and playwright Annie Baker, author of two plays seen off-Broadway this season, "Circle Mirror Transformation" and "The Aliens."

Founded in 1935, the Circle is composed of drama critics from daily newspapers, magazines, wire services and websites based in the New York metropolitan area.
