[May 06, 2010]  (AP)  The Northeast and New England were forecast to see scattered showers and thunderstorms Thursday.

A low pressure system and associated cold front would move eastward over the Great Lakes and into the northeastern U.S. This system would pull moisture in from the Atlantic Ocean and spread scattered showers to the lower Great Lakes, New England and the Northeast. Rainfall amounts between a quarter and a tenth of an inch were expected, with up to an inch in areas of thunderstorm development. These storms have a history of turning severe and could kick up some strong winds, hail and periods of heavy downpours. Most of the Midwest, Great Lakes and New England would remain in the 60s Thursday.

To the South, a stationary front hovering over Florida would finally push eastward and away from the Southeast. Thus, scattered showers and thunderstorms would diminish over the state as a ridge of high pressure builds over the southern U.S. Highs in the 80s and 90s were expected. Strong winds in the southern Plains would allow for fires to remain a threat Thursday. Gusts would reach up to 35 mph in many areas.

In the North, another low pressure system that moved into the Pacific Northwest would continue tracking over the northern Rockies and into the high Plains and upper Midwest. This would bring another round of light rain and snow to higher elevations. Near a half an inch of rain was expected over the Dakotas, with 1-2 inches of new snow in the northern Rockies.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 3 degrees at Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 100 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
