[May 11, 2010]  SPRINGFIELD -- A student at Zion Lutheran School in Lincoln received a statewide award during the annual Illinois History Expo on May 6 in Springfield.

Insurance"The Illinois History Expo winners represent the state's best history students and teachers. We applaud their dedication, ingenuity and excellence," said Illinois Historic Preservation Agency Director Jan Grimes. The agency sponsors the event in cooperation with the Chicago Metro History Education Center.

Alysa Marie Cox won the Illinois and Michigan Canal Award and a $50 prize for her project, "How did the Illinois & Michigan Canal help shape Illinois as we know it today?" The award is presented for the best project concerning the Illinois and Michigan Canal. It is presented by the Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor Association, a membership organization that preserves history, protects nature and open space, and creates destinations where people can learn and have fun in the I & M Canal National Heritage Corridor, from Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Illinois River in LaSalle-Peru. It enhances, raises awareness of and expands the parks, trails, landscape and historic sites that make the I & M Canal region a special place.

More than 1,400 junior and senior high school students from across the state participated in the May 6 expo. The students were winners selected during regional history fairs earlier this year.

The regional fairs and the Illinois History Expo are coordinated by IHPA's Education Services Program, which also publishes the online student history magazine Illinois History and Illinois History Teacher, which contains teaching materials.
