[May 12, 2010]  (AP)  Another rainy day was expected over the Northeast and New England on Wednesday as a low pressure slowly moved eastward and into the Atlantic Ocean.

InsuranceThe low pressure system that kicked up severe weather in the central Plains, then periods of heavy rain in the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes, was expected to move offshore and into the Atlantic on Wednesday. Flow around this system would pull moisture inland and allow for scattered showers to persist from Pennsylvania to Maine. Most areas were expected to see rainfall totals between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, with up to a half an inch in areas of thunderstorm development. This system had lost most of its strength, so severe weather was not anticipated.

To the west, another low pressure system would move off the Rocky Mountains and into the central Plains. This would create another warm front that would extend over Nebraska and Kansas and into the mid-Mississippi Valley. As this system pulled moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico, scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected to develop along this front. In the North, moisture would wrap around this system and reach into the northern and central Rockies. Three to 5 inches of new snow was expected at high elevations of Wyoming, while Colorado would see 1-3 inches of new snow.

In the South, flow around this trough of low pressure would also pull hot air in from Mexico. Highs were expected to reach into the 90s over most of the southern Plains. This would also bring strong winds with gusts up to 30 mph, which would make conditions favorable for rapid fire spread.

In the West, a ridge of high pressure continued building over the West Coast. This would allow for warmer and drier conditions with highs in the 60s and 70s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 8 degrees at Windom, Minn., to a high of 102 degrees at Pecos, Texas.
