[May 18, 2010]  (AP)  Scattered showers were forecast to persist in the East, while snow would fall over the Rockies on Tuesday.

A low pressure system that brought light rain to the West Coast was pushing northeastward and into the northern and central Rockies. This picked up moisture from the Pacific Ocean and would trigger scattered snow showers at higher elevations. Snowfall accumulations between 2-4 inches were expected over parts of Utah, while the Sierras might see up to an inch Tuesday morning. Ahead of this system, strong winds would be kicked up throughout the day. The central and northern Rockies would see gusts up to 30 mph.

Behind this system, the West Coast would try to dry out as the low moved farther eastward. However, another trough of low pressure would approach the region, allowing for another cool and cloudy day with highs in the 50s and 60s over the Pacific Northwest and most of California.

In the Plains, a ridge of high pressure continued building over the North, allowing for mostly sunny skies and warm conditions. The upper Midwest and northern Plains would see highs in the 70s again Tuesday.

In the East, a low pressure system would linger over the Mid-Atlantic and New England states, bringing another day with widespread scattered showers to most of the East Coast. This system would create a front that extended over the Southeast and into the southern Plains, where it would kick up scattered thunderstorms. These storms have a history of turning severe and, forecasters said, might kick up large hail, strong winds and periods of heavy downpours. The Gulf states would remain in the 80s, while New England remained in the 50s and 60s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 24 degrees at Leadville, Colo., to a high of 98 degrees at Goodyear, Ariz.
