[May 21, 2010]  (AP)  Scattered showers and thunderstorms were forecast to persist in the Southeast on Friday as a low pressure system continued sweeping through the region.

HardwareThe system would create two frontal boundaries: a cold front that would extend down the Mississippi River and a warm front that tracked over the Southeast. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico would feed strength and energy into this system, producing scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. Wet weather would stretch from the Great Lakes to the Gulf. If the system did produce some severe storms, they would most likely pop up over the Ohio and Tennessee River valleys. The system was capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, heavy downpours and even tornadoes. Floods would continue to threaten the mid- and lower Mississippi River Valley, as multiple systems had saturated the ground the past few days.

In the East, a ridge of high pressure lingering over the East Coast would allow for plenty of sunshine and warm conditions to persist. Highs were expected to reach into the 80s over the Northeast and New England.

In the West, a trough of low pressure continued moving through the Rockies, kicking up scattered showers and thunderstorms in the northern Plains. Wyoming and Montana would see between a tenth and a quarter of an inch of rain, with up to a half of an inch in areas of thunderstorms.

Farther west, another low pressure system approached the Pacific Northwest on Friday, spreading another round of light and scattered showers over the region. Another cool and dreary day was expected over most of the West Coast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 24 degrees at Mullan Pass, Idaho, to a high of 100 degrees at Goodyear, Ariz.
