Andre Braugher to step into Civil War-era play

[November 03, 2010]  NEW YORK (AP) -- Emmy winner Andre Braugher will star in the New York premier of Matthew Lopez's Civil War-era play "The Whipping Man."

Manhattan Theatre Club says Braugher will play one of two newly freed former slaves who welcome home a severely wounded Jewish Confederate officer in Virginia. The casting for the other parts will be announced later.

His other New York stage credits include "Hamlet," "The Tragedy of Richard II," "Measure for Measure" and "Twelfth Night."

"The Whipping Man" will begin performances Jan. 13 at New York City Center and will be directed by Tony winner Doug Hughes.
