[November 02, 2010]  Community Action announced Monday that it has over $25,000 to loan out to small businesses in an effort to provide job opportunities to local residents.

As part of the Community Services Block Grant administered by Community Action, funding is available to local businesses in order to stimulate economic development in the agency's service area. Businesses can use the funds to create or maintain jobs. The funding is from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

"Several local businesses have been able to expand and thrive thanks in part to the small-business loan program funded by the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The interest rates are affordable and the requirements are minimal," said Angela Stoltzenburg, executive director of Community Action.

Interested individuals are required to fill out an application and submit it for approval to the agency's governing board. For every $20,000 borrowed, one job must be created or retained.

Community Action is a private, nonprofit organization working to eliminate the causes and effects of poverty in DeWitt, Fulton, Logan, Mason, Menard and Piatt counties.

For more information about the loan program, call 1-877-588-7189 and ask for Kathy Inman, fiscal officer.
