[November 03, 2010]  (AP)  Two major systems were expected to affect the nation Wednesday. The first one over the northern-central Gulf of Mexico and Gulf states was forecast to move very little Wednesday, resulting in continued numerous showers and thunderstorms from eastern Texas across the Gulf states.

InsuranceThis system would be slowly merging with a coastal front developing over the Carolina coast. This coastal front was expected to trigger showers and thunderstorms over parts of the Southeast Coast through Wednesday night, then move into the Mid-Atlantic overnight Wednesday.

The second system would be the cold front that was expected to move through the upper Midwest and Great Lakes. Light to moderate showers and isolated thunderstorms were anticipated as the system moved through. Rain could become heavy at times Wednesday morning over the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Thursday, rain could mix with snow at higher elevation over parts of New York State in the morning, and light snow was likely over the western portion of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

In addition to precipitation, much colder air was forecast to filter in after the cold front Wednesday night through Friday, which could lead to some lake-effect snow Wednesday night through Thursday morning. Overnight temperatures were expected to drop near or below freezing, while daytime temperatures would be in the 40s mainly.

Elsewhere, high pressure was expected to continue dominating across the western U.S., bringing above-normal temperatures west of the Rockies.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 10 degrees at Mount Washington, N.H., to a high of 99 degrees at Poway, Calif.
