Fierstein to replace Douglas Hodge in 'La Cage'

[November 10, 2010]  NEW YORK (AP) -- How do you replace Tony Award-winning Douglas Hodge in the revival of "La Cage aux Folles" (lah-KAJ'-oh-fahl)? One way is with the musical's author.

Producers say Harvey Fierstein (FY'-ur-steen), who won a 1984 Tony for writing the show's book, will slip into the role of Albin after Hodge leaves on Feb. 13. Kelsey Grammer also will leave the show that day.

Fierstein, who has won Tonys for his work in "Hairspray" and "Torch Song Trilogy," will appear in a 12-week run opposite a co-star yet to be announced.

Fierstein says it will be a challenge playing the part decades after writing it, but joked: "I know how to reach the author for rewrites."
