[November 10, 2010]  NEW YORK (AP) -- George Steinbrenner and baseball historian and official scorer Bill Shannon have been voted posthumous awards by the New York chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Steinbrenner, who owned the New York Yankees from 1973 until his death at age 80 on July 13, was voted the Joan Payson Award for community service at the chapter's annual meeting Tuesday.

Shannon, an official scorer since 1979, author of the book "The Ballparks" and longtime contributor to The Associated Press, died Oct. 26 in a house fire at age 69. He was voted the William J. Slocum-Jack Lang Award for Long and Meritorious Service.

The awards will be presented at the annual New York BBWAA dinner on Jan. 22.

Retiring managers Joe Torre, Lou Piniella and Bobby Cox will be given the Willie, Mickey and the Duke Award, and Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton will receive the Sid Mercer-Dick Young Player of the Year Award. San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum was voted the Babe Ruth Award as postseason MVP.

Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes was voted the Ben Epstein-Dan Castellano Good Guy Award, and former Minnesota Twins slugger Harmon Killebrew the Casey Stengel You Could Look It Up Award for the 50th anniversary of his 1961 season, when he hit 46 homers but was overshadowed by Roger Maris (61) and Mickey Mantle (54).

Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano was voted the Joe DiMaggio Toast of the Town Award, and Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey the Arthur and Milton Richman You Gotta Have Heart Award.
