[November 22, 2010]  The season is upon us when house fires can happen at a moment's notice as the result of a live Christmas tree igniting.

The first such fire of the season occurred Saturday evening on the campus of Lincoln Christian University, in Alumni Hall, a dorm building with approximately 50 occupants.

The fire broke out at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, and the Lincoln Fire Department was called to the scene.

A spokesman for the fire department said no significant damage was done to the structure, no injuries or loss of life, and the fire had actually been put out with fire extinguishers before the fire department arrived.

The 50 or so students who occupy Alumni Hall were displaced for the weekend as cleanup efforts ensued.

The fire department will visit LCU today (Monday) to assure that all is well and to issue reminders to students that live trees are not allowed in dorm rooms.

The Lincoln Fire Department would like to remind everyone to be alert this holiday season. If you choose a live tree for your Christmas celebration, be sure to keep it properly watered, check needles for dryness, be sure there are no frayed wires on lights, and never leave a lit tree unattended.

In the United States on the average there are 200 Christmas tree fires annually, resulting in approximately two dozen deaths.
