7th-grade Lady Wolverines win regional 1A championship

[November 27, 2010]  SPRINGFIELD -- On Wednesday, the seventh-grade Lady Wolverine basketball team made history. The girls brought home the regional championship for the seventh-grade 1A for the first time in West Lincoln-Broadwell School history.

The Lady Wolverine basketball team started their road to the regional championship by defeating Carroll Catholic by a score of 17-15. Brook Soebbing led all scorers with 10 points.

The Lady Wolverines then faced the No.1 seed, Springfield Christian. The girls showed up and proved they were not ready to go home. The Lady Wolverines knocked off Springfield Christian by a score of 29-23.The Lady Wolverines outscored Springfield Christian in the fourth quarter by a score of 14-0 to pull ahead and take the win.

Brook Soebbing led in scoring with 14, Kaelyn Froebe followed with six, and Emily Martinez had five points. Kate Benner and Brook Soebbing led the team with 10 rebounds each. This win put the WL-B girls in the regional championship Wednesday against the host school, Little Flower.

The Lady Wolverines once again proved they were a team that wanted to stay alive in postseason play. They started the first quarter with a controlled offensive tempo and an unbelievable pressure defense. WL-B led after the first quarter 4-0. The halftime score put WL-B down 9-6, but their motto "Don't Quit" came into full effect again in the second half. In the fourth quarter WL-B went up by two points on a 3-point putback by Kate Benner. The girls kept their composure and held off their opponent to win by a score of 21-19, acquiring the school's first-ever seventh-grade regional basketball championship.

Brook Soebbing led the Wolverines in scoring with eight points. Kaylyn Hoffert and Emily Martinez each added four. Kaylyn Hoffert and Kaelyn Froebe also led the team with three steals each as Brook Soebbing and Kate Benner led rebounding with nine rebounds each.

The win was a complete team effort and a true testament that hard work and determination pay off.

The seventh-grade Lady Wolverines will be back in play on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Little Flower against against Jacksonville Our Saviour. Game time is 6 p.m.
