Single-car fatal crash claims San Jose life

[May 10, 2011]  SPRINGFIELD -- The following is an Illinois State Police narrative of an accident that claimed the life of a San Jose resident:

Date, time: Nov. 27, 4:45 a.m.

Person involved: Driver -- Shannon N. Hammel, 25-year-old female, San Jose; died

Vehicle: 2005 Ford, gray

Assisting agencies: Lincoln Rural Fire, Logan County Sheriff's Office

Narrative: The gray 2005 Ford was traveling on Route 136 eastbound, west of Delavan Road. The vehicle went off the south side of the roadway onto the gravel shoulder. The driver overcorrected back onto the roadway, losing control of the vehicle and going off the south side of the roadway for a second time.

The vehicle traveled through the ditch and overturned several times in the plowed field on the south side of Route 136. The female driver, the lone occupant, was unrestrained and was ejected from the vehicle.
