A final reading of the University of Michigan/Reuters consumer sentiment index is likely to indicate a drop in confidence last month. In corporate news, Hewlett-Packard Co. shares dropped in pre-opening trading after the computer company named Leo Apotheker its new CEO. Shares fell 83 cents, or 2 percent, to $41.24. Bond prices slipped and interest rates rose as investors moved into riskier assets. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which is a benchmark for interest rates on mortgages and other loans, rose to 2.53 percent from 2.51 percent late Thursday. Overseas, China's Shanghai composite index jumped 1.7 percent, while Japan's Nikkei stock average rose 0.4 percent. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 1 percent, Germany's DAX index gained 0.8 percent, and France's CAC-40 rose 0.6 percent.
