[October 04, 2010]  (AP)  The West was forecast to start the workweek with cooler weather conditions Monday as a large low pressure trough moved over California and advanced eastward toward the Intermountain West.

Moisture associated with this system was expected to trigger increased cloud coverage with scattered showers over the Southwest. Showery weather and thunderstorms were expected to increase across parts the Intermountain West as the system approached. Moisture lifting over the higher elevations of the Sierra Mountains and the southern Great Basin would produce the heaviest amounts of precipitation.

Meanwhile, as low pressure dominated the West, strong high pressure would build over the central U.S., becoming the main weather feature of the Midwest and the Deep South. Areas in the northern and central High Plains would experience above-normal daytime highs due to this system, while relatively cool temperatures were expected elsewhere through the start of the workweek.

Finally, in the East, low pressure from the Ohio Valley was forecast to push eastward Monday, keeping cool temperatures, rain showers and chances of thunderstorms over portions of the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 20 degrees at Embarrass, Minn., to a high of 102 degrees at Gila Bend, Ariz.
