Would-be 'Canadian Idol' on bail in terrorism case

[October 14, 2010]  TORONTO (AP) -- A terror suspect who appeared on the TV show "Canadian Idol" has been granted bail on charges connected to an alleged plot to build bombs.

The "Idol" contestant, Dr. Khurram Syed Sher, 28, was charged in August with conspiracy to promote terrorist activity. Police said they seized 50 circuit boards intended for use in remotely detonated bombs.

An Ontario court judge granted Sher bail Wednesday under strict conditions.

Sher has been ordered to live with Toronto-area relatives, who posted bond totaling $182,000. He must report to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police weekly.

Details of the bail proceedings are under a publication ban.

Sher appeared on the reality show in 2008 singing a comical version of Avril Lavigne's "Complicated," complete with dance moves that included a moonwalk.
