Zion speech team, 4-H Hollanders, CEFCU and Lincoln Woman's Club make Close Up

[October 19, 2010]  Zion Lutheran School in Lincoln hosted the annual Logan County Music and Athletic Association Speech Contest last Saturday. Participating schools were Carroll Catholic School, Mount Pulaski Grade School and Zion Lutheran School.

ZLS results were as follows: Aaron Butler and Josh Mangano, and Emma Nobbe and Joe Ahrends received the special recognition of Judge's Choice awards for their duet acting performances. Receiving a No. 1 (top) rating were Emma Nobbe and Joe Ahrends -- duet acting; Aaron Butler and Josh Mangano -- duet acting; Joe Ahrends and Drew Simmer -- improv duet acting; Emma Nobbe and Claire Conrady -- improv duet acting; and Danielle Burgrabe and Sydney Johnson -- duet acting. Joe Ahrends also received a No. 2 rating for individual impromptu speaking.

The ZLS speech team will participate in the IESA State Speech Contest on Saturday, Nov. 6, at Mount Pulaski Grade School.

The 4-H club Hollanders met on Oct. 17 at the New Holland Community Center in New Holland. Leaders were Pam Tibbs and John Coers, with 15 members present and four visitors.

Business discussed: The club will have a caramel apple fundraiser on Oct. 23 at the New Holland Fall Festival. The club theme and emphasis for the year will be breast cancer pillows to be donated to the American Cancer Society. A pizza fundraiser will be on Dec. 4 and sales will begin this month. Also, club shirts will be ordered.

Dru Dahman gave a talk about the International Night, the country that the club represented and the guest speaker.

The club played the game Bouncers and refreshments were served by Troy Rawlings.

CEFCU is having an employee day of planting tulips in front of their building Oct. 19. What a great way to get involved! The wave of red tulips on Fifth Street next spring will be a great reminder that CEFCU is joining in the city's beautification efforts.

The Lincoln Woman's Club GFWCIL thanks Lincoln Daily News for publicity during their recent drive for socks for troops. The club also thanks the Lincoln IGA and Kroger for collecting donations, as well as Zion Lutheran School, Dr. Morales, the Junior Woman's Club and all the individuals who donated material and items to fill stockings and pay for postage.

Over 200 socks, a carload of items and $200 for postage have been delivered to District 17 GFWC. The socks will be filled and shipped to our soldiers two weeks before Thanksgiving. Each sock will also carry a handwritten Christmas card thanking them for their service and wishing them well.
